Summer in Zurich: swimming in the lake and river

Zurich's clean lake and river become the city's living room in summer. Here is how to join the locals in the water.

A city that swims

On hot summer days, Zurich residents head to the water. The lake and the Limmat river are remarkably clean, and swimming in them is a normal part of city life. Office workers take a dip at lunchtime, families spend weekends at the lakeside, and in the evening the bathing spots fill with people relaxing in the last of the sun.

The season generally runs from around May to September, depending on the weather and water temperature.

Water temperatures in early summer can still feel bracing, so many visitors ease in gradually from the ladders rather than diving straight in.

The bathing houses

Zurich's traditional bathing houses, called Badis, are wooden structures built over the water with changing rooms, sunbathing decks and ladders into the lake or river. Some date back more than a century and have a wonderfully nostalgic feel. Several have separate sections or set hours for women or men, while others are open to everyone.

A few of these bathing houses turn into bars after dark, with music, drinks and lights reflecting on the water. They are among the most atmospheric places in the city on a summer evening.

Entry is typically modest and some lakeside meadows with swimming access are free.

Floating down the river

A favourite summer pastime is to float down the Limmat or, outside the city, the river Aare. People put their clothes and phones into waterproof dry bags, which double as floats, and drift with the current before climbing out at a designated exit point.

The current can be strong, so only do this if you are a confident swimmer, follow local signs and stick to recognised entry and exit points. Never swim after drinking alcohol, and keep away from boats and bridges.

Other summer pleasures

Beyond swimming, summer in Zurich means open-air cinema by the lake, outdoor concerts and festivals, and long evenings on restaurant terraces. Lake cruises are especially lovely at sunset. Many residents cycle along the shores, and bike rental is easy to arrange.

Summer is a popular time to visit, so book accommodation early. Swimwear packs small, so a Lite or Classic fare should leave you plenty of room.

If the weather turns, the city's indoor pools and museums make easy alternatives, and summer storms usually pass quickly.

Good to know

  • Buy a waterproof dry bag for river floating; they are sold all over the city.
  • Check water temperature notices at the bathing houses.
  • Respect the swimming rules and signs posted at each spot.
