Where to stay in Zurich: lake, old town and creative quarters

Zurich is small but varied. Here is how the Altstadt, Seefeld, Kreis 4 and Zurich West compare, and which suits your trip.

A compact city on the lake

Zurich sits at the northern tip of Lake Zurich, where the Limmat river flows out through the heart of the city. It is compact and very well organised, with trams reaching almost everywhere. Trains from Zurich airport reach the main station in a short time, making arrival quick and easy.

Switzerland is not a cheap destination, so choosing the right area can help balance comfort, convenience and budget.

Altstadt

The old town lines both banks of the Limmat. On the eastern side, the Niederdorf area is lively, with narrow lanes, guild houses, bars and restaurants. The western side, around the Lindenhof and the elegant Bahnhofstrasse shopping street, is calmer and more refined.

Staying in the Altstadt suits first-time visitors and short trips, as most sights, the lake and the main station are within walking distance.

The city is also very safe and quiet at night, so even central hotels tend to be peaceful once the restaurants close.

Seefeld and Enge

Seefeld, along the eastern shore of the lake, is upmarket and peaceful, with lakeside promenades, swimming spots in summer and stylish cafés. It is ideal for couples and travellers who want calm evenings.

Enge, on the western shore, offers a similar lakeside setting with green parks and good transport links, a practical choice for business travellers and families.

Kreis 4 and Zurich West

Kreis 4, around the Langstrasse, is the city's most diverse and lively district, known for its bars, international food and nightlife. It is close to the main station and often offers better value.

Zurich West, in Kreis 5, is a former industrial area transformed into a creative quarter, with converted factories, shops beneath railway arches and modern hotels. It suits younger travellers and design lovers looking for something beyond the postcard view.

Wherever you stay, the lake is never far away. Boats on Lake Zurich are part of the public transport network, and a short cruise is a relaxing way to see the city from the water on a sunny afternoon.

Good to know

  • Use trams; tickets cover the whole city zone and they run very frequently.
  • Bring swimwear in summer; the lake and river baths are a local tradition.
  • Look at Kreis 4 or Kreis 5 for better-value hotels.
