Understanding Vienna's districts
Vienna is divided into numbered districts, or Bezirke, which spiral outwards from the historic centre. The first district sits inside the Ringstrasse, the grand boulevard that replaced the old city walls, and most visitors stay in or close to it.
Public transport is excellent, with the U-Bahn, trams and buses covering the city. From the airport, the City Airport Train and regular S-Bahn trains both reach the centre, so staying near Wien Mitte or another major station is convenient.
Innere Stadt
The first district is home to St Stephen's Cathedral, the Hofburg palace, the State Opera and countless historic coffee houses. Staying here means you can walk to almost every major sight. It suits first-time visitors and anyone on a short break, though hotels are generally more expensive.
Staying just outside the Ring, in districts such as Alsergrund near the university, can offer a good balance of price and convenience, with the old town only a short tram ride away.
Neubau, Mariahilf and Wieden
Neubau, the seventh district, is Vienna's creative quarter, with design shops, independent cafés and the MuseumsQuartier on its edge. Mariahilf, the sixth, is known for its long shopping street and lively side streets. Both suit younger travellers and those who want a vibrant, local feel within walking distance of the centre.
Wieden, the fourth, borders the famous Naschmarkt, with its food stalls and restaurants. It is central, attractive and slightly calmer, a good choice for food lovers and couples.
Leopoldstadt and Landstrasse
Leopoldstadt, the second district, lies between the Danube Canal and the Danube, and includes the large Prater park with its famous giant Ferris wheel. It offers good value, plenty of green space and a growing restaurant scene, ideal for families and active travellers.
Landstrasse, the third district, is home to the Belvedere palace and gardens and is well connected to the airport. It is a practical, pleasant option for business travellers and anyone wanting quick transfers.
