A city built around a palace
Split grew up inside and around the walls of the palace built for the Roman emperor Diocletian, and much of the old town still sits within those ancient walls. Today it is a lively harbour city and the main ferry port for many of the central Dalmatian islands.
The airport lies along the coast to the west, between Split and Trogir, with buses and taxis into the city. If you plan to catch ferries, staying near the harbour saves time and hauling luggage.
Inside the palace and the old town
Staying within Diocletian's Palace is a unique experience: stone lanes, hidden courtyards and Roman columns are right outside your door. Accommodation is mostly in small hotels and apartments. It suits couples and first-time visitors, although the area is busy in summer and some lanes stay loud into the night.
Just outside the walls, the Riva waterfront promenade and the streets nearby offer the same convenience with slightly more space.
Varoš and Meje
Varoš, west of the old town, is a historic neighbourhood of narrow streets and old stone houses climbing towards Marjan Hill. It feels local and is only a few minutes' walk from the palace. It is ideal for travellers who want character and easy access to the forest paths and swimming spots of Marjan.
Meje, on the southern slopes of Marjan, is quieter and greener, with villas, sea views and small beaches nearby. It suits families and anyone looking for peaceful evenings.
Bačvice and the eastern beaches
Bačvice, just east of the ferry port, is Split's best-known city beach, with shallow water and a lively atmosphere, popular for the local ball game picigin. It suits beach lovers and younger travellers. Further east, areas such as Žnjan have long beaches and newer hotels, a good option for families who want more space and do not mind a bus or taxi into town.
Many places in Split are private apartments rather than hotels. They often include a kitchen and outdoor space, which works well for families and longer stays, but check the check-in arrangements in advance, as there may be no reception desk.
Good to know
- Choose a morning flight arrival if you plan to catch a ferry the same day.
- Pack light; many old-town lanes have steps and cobbles.
