Where to stay in Prague: a district-by-district guide

Old Town squares, Lesser Town charm or local life in Vinohrady: here is how Prague's neighbourhoods compare for visitors.

Getting your bearings

Prague's historic centre sits on both banks of the Vltava, linked by the famous Charles Bridge. Many of the main sights are within walking distance of each other, and trams and the metro cover the rest of the city well.

From the airport, buses connect to the metro network and there is an airport express bus to the main railway station, so staying near a metro or tram stop makes arrivals easy.

Old Town and Josefov

Staré Město, the Old Town, is home to the Old Town Square, the astronomical clock and a maze of medieval streets. It is the most central option and ideal for first-time visitors on a short break, though it can be crowded and is often pricier.

Josefov, the historic Jewish quarter within the Old Town, is calmer, with elegant streets and important synagogues. It suits travellers who want a central base with a little more peace.

Malá Strana and Nové Město

Across the river, Malá Strana, or the Lesser Town, lies beneath Prague Castle. Baroque palaces, hidden gardens and cobbled lanes make it one of the most romantic parts of the city. It is quieter in the evening once the day visitors leave, and suits couples.

Nové Město, the New Town, was founded in the 14th century and centres on Wenceslas Square. It is busy and practical, with plenty of hotels, shops and transport connections, a good choice for value and convenience.

Vinohrady, Žižkov and Holešovice

Vinohrady, just southeast of the centre, has grand residential buildings, parks and a wide choice of cafés and restaurants. It feels local yet is only a few tram stops from the Old Town, ideal for longer stays.

Žižkov, next door, is known for its pubs and its distinctive TV tower, and appeals to budget travellers. Holešovice, north of the river bend, is the city's creative district, with galleries, a large market hall area and converted industrial spaces.
