City break or beach holiday?
Palma is both a historic Mediterranean city and the gateway to the beaches of Mallorca. Where you stay depends on the balance you want. Some areas put you among cathedral views, galleries and tapas bars, while others give you a sea view and a short walk to the sand.
The airport is close to the city, and buses and taxis make the trip in a short time, so whichever area you pick, you will not lose much of your first day.
The old town
Palma's Casco Antiguo surrounds the great Gothic cathedral that rises above the bay. Its narrow streets hide grand mansions with courtyards, many now converted into boutique hotels. It is the place for culture, shopping and evening strolls, and suits couples and travellers on a city break.
Santa Catalina and the Paseo Marítimo
West of the old town, Santa Catalina was once a fishermen's quarter and is now one of the city's liveliest areas for food. Its covered market, cafés and international restaurants make it ideal for food lovers and friends travelling together.
The Paseo Marítimo runs along the marina with views of yachts and the cathedral. Hotels here often have sea views, and the waterfront promenade is perfect for walking or cycling. It suits travellers who want the city and the sea at the same time.
Portixol and the beach resorts
East of the centre, Portixol and Es Molinar are former fishing villages with low-rise houses, a small harbour and a relaxed promenade. You can cycle into the old town along the seafront, and there are small beaches nearby. It suits couples and anyone looking for a quieter seaside base.
If the beach is the main reason for your trip, the long sandy stretch of Playa de Palma to the east and the smaller coves to the west of the city offer resort hotels and easy swimming. These areas suit families and sun seekers who still want Palma within reach for a day out.
Good to know
- Rent a bike to ride the seafront path between Portixol and the old town.
- Consider a Flight + Hotel package for summer stays.
- Book old-town boutique hotels early; many have only a few rooms.
