Where to stay in Nice for a seaside holiday

Promenade, old town or port? Each Nice neighbourhood offers a different seaside stay. Here's how to choose the right one for you.

Nice is made for beach-city breaks

Nice combines a proper city, with museums, markets and a lively food scene, with a long seafront and easy access to the rest of the Riviera. Where you stay shapes your trip: some areas put you right on the beach, while others offer more character or better value a short walk inland.

The good news is that Nice is compact, and the tram network makes it easy to get around, so there are no really wrong choices.

Along the Promenade des Anglais

For many visitors, a sea-view room on the Promenade des Anglais is the dream. Hotels here range from grand Belle Époque landmarks to modern chain properties, and you can step from the lobby onto the beach. The views over the Baie des Anges are spectacular, especially at sunrise.

The downside is traffic noise from the busy road between the hotels and the sea, so ask for a higher floor if you are sensitive to noise. Prices for sea-view rooms are higher, particularly in summer.

Old town and the port

The old town, Vieux Nice, is a maze of narrow lanes, painted façades, markets and restaurants, just a few minutes from the beach. Staying here means great atmosphere but sometimes smaller rooms and evening noise from bars. Many accommodation options are in apartments rather than hotels.

The port area, east of the old town behind the castle hill, has a more local feel, with cafés, a growing restaurant scene and easy access to the rocky swimming spots towards Coco Beach. It is also close to boat departures along the coast.

Carré d'Or and Cimiez

The Carré d'Or, just behind the Promenade near the centre, is an elegant area with good shops and restaurants, and puts you a short walk from both the beach and the old town.

Cimiez, on the hill above the city, is quieter and greener, with Roman ruins and museums dedicated to Matisse and Chagall. It suits travellers who prefer peace in the evening and don't mind a bus or a walk down to the sea.

Booking tips

Summer and major events push prices up, so book early for July and August. The site's hotel search lets you filter by neighbourhood, and a Flight + Hotel package to Nice can combine flights and a room in a single booking. The tram from the airport serves the Promenade and the city centre, making it easy to reach most areas without a taxi.

Good to know

  • Ask for a higher floor on the Promenade to reduce traffic noise.
