Where to stay in Munich: Altstadt, Schwabing and beyond

From the historic old town to student-filled Maxvorstadt and the riverside Glockenbach, here is how Munich's neighbourhoods compare.

An easy city to navigate

Munich combines a well-preserved old town with leafy residential districts, all linked by an efficient network of U-Bahn, S-Bahn and trams. S-Bahn lines run from Munich airport to the city centre, so areas around the main station and the central S-Bahn trunk line are especially convenient.

Prices rise sharply during major trade fairs and the autumn beer festival, so it is worth checking dates before you book.

Altstadt and the main station

The Altstadt, centred on Marienplatz, is home to grand churches, the Viktualienmarkt food market and traditional beer halls. Staying here means you can walk almost everywhere, which suits first-time visitors and short stays.

The area around the Hauptbahnhof is less charming but practical, with many hotels at a range of prices and fast links to the airport and to day trips by train.

Hotels close to the old town fill quickly around the Christmas market season in Advent, when the squares are full of stalls and mulled wine. If you plan to visit at that time, booking early is a good idea.

Maxvorstadt and Schwabing

Maxvorstadt is Munich's museum and university district, home to major art galleries and plenty of affordable cafés. It is lively, central and a great choice for culture lovers.

Schwabing, further north, borders the English Garden, one of the largest city parks in Europe. Its tree-lined streets, elegant buildings and relaxed cafés make it ideal for couples and families who want space to breathe.

Glockenbachviertel and Haidhausen

The Glockenbachviertel, along the Isar south of the centre, is stylish and sociable, with independent boutiques, good restaurants and bars. In summer, the riverbanks become a favourite place to relax. It suits younger travellers and food lovers.

Haidhausen, across the river, has a village feel, with pretty squares, old buildings and neighbourhood restaurants. It is calmer and well connected, a good fit for travellers who prefer a local atmosphere.
