A city of many quarters
Barcelona stretches between the hills and the sea, and each district has its own style. Some are full of medieval history, others are laid out in a neat grid of modernist buildings, and a few still feel like the separate villages they once were.
The metro is quick and covers most areas, and there are good links from the airport to the city centre, so you can choose based on mood rather than location alone.
Gothic Quarter and El Born
The Barri Gòtic is the historic core, a maze of narrow streets around the cathedral, with hidden squares and Roman remains. It is atmospheric and central, perfect for a first visit, though it can be crowded and some streets are busy late at night.
El Born, across Via Laietana, is slightly calmer and more stylish, with independent boutiques, tapas bars and the great basilica of Santa Maria del Mar. It suits couples and anyone who wants old-town character with a creative edge.
Eixample and Gràcia
The Eixample is the grand 19th-century extension of the city, with wide avenues, chamfered street corners and some of the most famous modernist architecture. It offers a wide range of hotels, good transport links and a slightly more grown-up atmosphere. It is a strong all-round choice for families and longer stays.
Further uphill, Gràcia feels like a small town of its own, with leafy squares, local bars and a strong neighbourhood identity. Return visitors love it for its relaxed evenings and easy access to Park Güell.
Barceloneta and Poble-sec
If the beach is a priority, Barceloneta puts you steps from the sand and the seafront promenade, with seafood restaurants nearby. It is lively in summer and best for travellers who plan to spend a lot of time by the sea.
Poble-sec, at the foot of Montjuïc, is known for its tapas streets and good value. It is a short walk to the Montjuïc museums and gardens and suits food lovers on a budget.
Good to know
- Keep an eye on your belongings in crowded areas and on public transport.
- Ask for an interior room if you are a light sleeper in the old town.
- Gràcia and Poble-sec often offer better value than the centre.
