A compact city with distinct moods
Amsterdam is small enough that you can walk or cycle across the centre in well under an hour, so almost anywhere central will work. What really changes from one area to the next is the atmosphere: some streets are busy late into the night, others feel like a quiet village a few minutes from the main sights.
Trains from Schiphol run directly to Centraal Station and to stations in the south of the city, which makes arriving on an AeroVista flight to AMS straightforward whichever area you choose.
The Canal Ring and the Jordaan
The semicircle of canals around the old centre is the Amsterdam of postcards: tall gabled houses, humpback bridges and boats gliding past. Staying here puts you within walking distance of almost everything, and the area is especially lovely early in the morning before the day-trippers arrive. It suits first-time visitors and couples, although rooms in historic buildings can be small and stairs steep.
Just to the west, the Jordaan has narrow lanes, independent shops, brown cafés and small courtyards. It is calmer at night than the very centre and a favourite for return visitors who want character over convenience.
Museum Quarter and De Pijp
Around Museumplein and the Vondelpark, the streets are wide, leafy and elegant. You are close to the major art museums and the concert hall, and the park is perfect for a morning run. It is a good choice for culture lovers and families who want a quieter base.
De Pijp, a short walk east, has a busier, younger energy. The daily street market, a wide range of cafés and restaurants and a lively evening scene make it ideal for food lovers and friends travelling together.
Oost and Noord
Amsterdam Oost, around the zoo and the Oosterpark, is residential, multicultural and good value. Trams take you into the centre quickly. Across the IJ, Noord is reached by free ferries from behind Centraal Station and has a creative, post-industrial feel, with converted warehouses, waterside spots and more space. Both suit travellers on a longer stay or anyone who likes to live like a local.
Good to know
- Ask about stairs before booking a canal house; many have steep, narrow steps.
- Walk or rent a bike rather than taking taxis in the centre.
- Book well ahead for weekends in spring and summer.
