Where to go in October: late sun, harvests and quiet cities

October offers warm seas in the south and golden colours in the north. Here's where the month shines brightest on our network.

A month of two halves

October is one of Europe's most versatile months. In the south, summer lingers, with warm afternoons and seas that have been heating up for months. In the north and centre, autumn arrives in earnest, bringing crisp mornings, changing leaves and harvest festivals.

Crowds fall away after the summer holidays end, and many destinations feel more relaxed and authentic as a result. Prices often begin to ease too, though autumn school holidays can push up demand for some dates.

Last swims of the year

For a final taste of summer, head to Crete, Mallorca or the Algarve. Heraklion often enjoys warm, settled weather well into the month, and the sea around Crete stays inviting after months of sunshine. Palma and the beaches of Mallorca are calmer than in August, and the mountain trails are cool enough for comfortable hiking again.

Faro and the Algarve combine sea swims with clifftop walks and golf. Atlantic water is cooler than the Mediterranean, but sunny days on the sand are still very pleasant.

Cities at their best

Rome, Madrid, Barcelona, Lisbon and Athens are all wonderful in October. Temperatures are ideal for walking, museums are less crowded and outdoor dining continues into the evening. In Athens, visiting the ancient sites without summer heat is a huge advantage.

Nice and Split shift into a slower rhythm, with sunny days, quieter old towns and many restaurants still open before some close for winter.

Autumn colour and comfort food

For a properly autumnal trip, look to Munich, Vienna, Prague, Zurich or Stuttgart. Forests and parks turn gold and red, vineyards finish their harvest and menus fill with mushrooms, pumpkin, game and chestnuts. Munich's autumn festival season typically extends into early October, so check dates if you want to avoid or join the crowds.

Dublin and Amsterdam are cosy choices, with fires lit in pubs and cafés and a busy calendar of cultural events as the new season begins.

Packing for October

Layers are essential, since mornings and evenings can be cool even when afternoons are warm. If you're combining a beach with a mountain or city stop, a checked bag on a Classic fare gives you room for swimwear, walking shoes and a warmer jacket without stress.

October also suits multi-stop trips. You could start with a few days of sunshine in Palma or Heraklion and finish with a cosy autumn weekend in Munich or Prague, enjoying the best of both seasons. Open-jaw bookings make it easy to fly into one city and home from another.

Good to know

  • Book southern beach trips for early October for the warmest sea.
  • Check opening dates for seasonal boat trips and beach restaurants.
  • Leave room in your bag for harvest produce such as wine, olive oil or honey.
