Day one: the historic centre
Start at St Stephen's Cathedral, the Gothic heart of Vienna, with its patterned tile roof and soaring south tower. From there, follow the elegant pedestrian streets of the Graben and Kohlmarkt towards the Hofburg, the vast former imperial palace. Inside, the imperial apartments and the museum dedicated to Empress Elisabeth give a glimpse of court life.
After lunch, take a tram along the Ringstrasse, the grand boulevard that encircles the old town and is lined with the opera house, parliament, city hall and museums. In the evening, consider a concert or an opera performance. Standing-room tickets at the opera are a famous, inexpensive way to experience it.
Day two: Schönbrunn and the museums
Head out by U-Bahn to Schönbrunn Palace, the summer residence of the Habsburgs. Tour the state rooms, then explore the extensive formal gardens, climbing to the Gloriette for a sweeping view back over the palace and the city. The grounds also contain one of the oldest zoos in the world.
Return to the centre for an afternoon in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, one of the world's great art museums, with works by old masters in sumptuous galleries. Its cafe under the dome is a memorable place for coffee and cake.
Day three: art nouveau and markets
Spend the morning at the Belvedere, a pair of baroque palaces that house an important collection of Austrian art, including famous paintings by Gustav Klimt. Then walk to the Secession building, with its golden dome of laurel leaves.
Nearby, the Naschmarkt is Vienna's best-known market, with stalls selling spices, cheeses, olives and international street food. In the late afternoon, relax in the MuseumsQuartier, where courtyards fill with locals lounging on outdoor furniture.
Practical tips
Vienna's public transport is excellent, and a 24-, 48- or 72-hour ticket can be good value. Flying into VIE, trains connect the airport with the city in under half an hour. The centre is safe and walkable, and you can reach most sights on foot or by tram.
If you plan to dine out in the evening, book ahead for popular restaurants, particularly at weekends.
