The big four
The market in front of the Rathaus is the largest, with an ice-skating trail through the park. Schönbrunn's market sits in front of the palace and feels more traditional, while Spittelberg's narrow lanes are full of craft stalls. Am Hof is the place for antiques.
What to try
Order a Punsch or Glühwein. Each market has its own collectible mug, which you can return for your deposit or keep as a souvenir. Pair it with Maroni (roasted chestnuts) or a Kartoffelpuffer, a crispy potato pancake.
When the cold gets too much
Duck into one of the city's classic coffee houses. A melange and a slice of cake can easily turn into an hour of reading the newspaper, and no one will hurry you out.
Good to know
- Markets typically open mid-November and run until 23 or 26 December.
- Weeknights are much quieter than weekends.
- Wear thermal layers. Standing still outside gets cold fast.
