Why prepare offline
Even with good roaming or an eSIM, coverage can drop out. Old town lanes with thick stone walls, underground stations, rural roads and mountain villages all have their dead spots. Battery life also matters: streaming maps and constant data use drain a phone quickly. A few minutes of preparation means your phone keeps working as a guide, ticket wallet and translator whatever the signal.
The good news is that none of this needs special equipment. The phone you already carry, a handful of free or low-cost apps and an evening on your home Wi-Fi are enough. Doing it at home also avoids using up data or hunting for a connection in the arrivals hall, where everyone else is trying to do the same thing.
Maps
Most popular map apps let you download areas for offline use. Save the whole city you are visiting, plus the route from the airport. With an offline map you can still see your location using GPS, search for saved places and, in many apps, get walking or driving directions.
Before you go, save your hotel, the nearest station, restaurants you want to try and the sights on your list. A map dotted with your own pins is far easier to navigate than a blank one.
Tickets and bookings
Add your boarding pass to your phone's wallet or save it as a screenshot or file, so it opens even without a connection. Do the same for hotel confirmations, rental car vouchers, museum tickets and train tickets. Keep a note with key addresses written in the local language, which is useful for taxi drivers.
The AeroVista app and website let you check in online from 72 hours before departure, view your booking and manage extras. Check in while you have a good connection, then save the boarding pass.
Language and transport
Translation apps often allow you to download language packs for offline use, and some can translate text from a photo, which is handy for menus and signs. Local public transport apps are worth installing in advance too, as many let you buy tickets on your phone.
Finally, consider your battery. Carry a power bank in your hand luggage, lower the screen brightness and close apps you are not using. A phone that lasts the whole day is the most useful travel tool you have.
