The northern Black Forest
Stuttgart is a good gateway to the Black Forest, the wooded mountain range in south-west Germany famous for its walking trails, cuckoo clocks and cherry cake. The northern part is within reach for a day trip, with towns such as Calw and Freudenstadt offering forest walks, viewpoints and traditional inns.
The Black Forest High Road, a scenic route along the ridge, is spectacular by car, with lakes, moorland and wide views across to the Rhine valley. A rental car gives you the freedom to stop wherever you like.
Do not leave without trying Black Forest gateau, layered with chocolate sponge, cherries, cream and a dash of cherry brandy, in the region where it is said to have been popularised.
Baden-Baden
On the western edge of the Black Forest, Baden-Baden is an elegant spa town known for its thermal baths, grand architecture and leafy promenade along the Oos river. It has long attracted visitors seeking relaxation, and its historic bathhouses still welcome guests today.
Combine a few hours in the thermal baths with a walk through the town's parks and a coffee in one of its traditional cafes. It is a gentle, restorative day out.
Tübingen
South of Stuttgart, the university town of Tübingen is one of the most charming in Germany. Its old town climbs a hill above the Neckar river, with half-timbered houses, steep lanes and a castle at the top. Students give the town a lively, youthful atmosphere.
In summer, traditional wooden punts glide along the river past the old houses. Taking a punt trip, or simply watching from the riverbank, is a highlight of a visit.
Hohenzollern Castle
Perched on a conical hill south of Tübingen, Hohenzollern Castle looks like something from a storybook. The castle is the ancestral seat of a dynasty that later ruled Prussia, and its turrets are visible from far across the countryside. Guided tours cover the interior, while the walls offer superb views.
Reaching the castle by public transport takes some planning, so many visitors drive. Combining it with Tübingen makes for a full and varied day.
Trains from Stuttgart are frequent for most of these destinations, so it is easy to pick and mix according to the weather and your interests. On rainy days, Baden-Baden's baths make a particularly good choice.
