The Dalmatian coast in autumn: warm seas, quiet towns

September and October bring warm water, golden light and a slower pace to Split and the surrounding coast. Here's how to make the most of it.

Why autumn works so well

In July and August, Split and the Dalmatian coast are at their busiest, with packed beaches, crowded old towns and full ferries. By September, the mood shifts. School holidays are over in much of Europe, temperatures ease, and the sea, which has been warming all summer, is often at its most pleasant.

Early autumn is a sweet spot: most hotels, restaurants and boat services are still running, but there is more space everywhere. October is quieter still, with a good chance of sunny, mild days, though the weather becomes less predictable as the month goes on.

Swimming and beach days

The Adriatic holds its summer warmth well into autumn, so swimming remains a joy in September and is still possible for many people in early October. Beaches that were packed a few weeks earlier, such as those on Marjan hill or along the Makarska Riviera, suddenly have room to spread out.

Shorter days mean you will want to start earlier, but the low afternoon light over the islands is a reward in itself. Bring a light layer for the evenings, which can turn cool after sunset.

Harvest season

Autumn is harvest time in Dalmatia. Grapes are picked in September, and the olive harvest follows later in the autumn. Visiting a winery on the mainland or on islands such as Brač or Hvar is a lovely way to spend a day, and some offer tastings of local varieties alongside cheese, cured ham and olive oil.

Menus also change with the season, with more game, mushrooms and hearty stews appearing alongside the seafood.

Things to check

Ferry and catamaran timetables shift to reduced schedules after the summer, typically around the end of September or in October, so check before planning island trips. Some island hotels and beach bars close for the season, while Split itself stays lively year-round thanks to its residents and students.

Autumn is also a good time to book a Flight + Hotel package to Split, with a wider choice of rooms than in high summer. Remember that the bora wind and autumn storms can occasionally disrupt sea crossings, so keep a little flexibility in your plans.

Many visitors also find the old town more enjoyable at this time of year. Without the summer crush, wandering the lanes of Diocletian's Palace in the evening feels calm and atmospheric.

Good to know

  • Aim for September for the best mix of warm sea and open services.
  • Check reduced ferry timetables before island day trips.
  • Pack a light jacket for cooler evenings.
