Bring the right documents
At the rental desk you will normally need a valid driving licence held for a minimum period, your passport or ID card, and a credit card in the main driver's name. Many companies do not accept debit cards for the security deposit, or accept them only with extra conditions, so check before you travel. If your licence was issued outside the EU, find out whether an international driving permit is required in the country you are visiting.
Any additional drivers usually need to be present at pick-up with their own licence. Young and older drivers may face age restrictions or surcharges.
Understand the deposit and insurance
Rental companies typically block a deposit on your credit card for the duration of the hire. The amount depends on the car and the insurance you choose. Basic cover often includes a significant excess, the amount you would pay towards damage. Desk staff may offer extra cover to reduce or remove that excess.
Decide in advance what level of cover you want, so you are not making the choice in a queue. Some travellers buy separate excess insurance before they go; read any policy carefully to understand how claims work.
Inspect the car
Before driving away, walk around the car and record every scratch, dent and chip, inside and out, with photos or a video that shows the date. Check that existing damage is marked on the rental agreement. Note the fuel level and mileage, and find out which fuel the car takes.
Ask about the fuel policy. A full-to-full arrangement, where you collect and return the car with a full tank, is usually the most transparent. Keep the final fuel receipt near the return location.
Know the local rules
Driving rules vary across Europe. Some countries, such as Austria and Czechia, require a motorway vignette or electronic toll registration, while others like Portugal and Croatia use toll systems that may be electronic. Many cities have low-emission zones or restricted historic centres where driving is limited. Ask the rental company what applies, and check whether the car has a toll device fitted.
You can book a rental car through the AeroVista website alongside your flight, so your pick-up time lines up with your arrival. Leave a buffer in case of baggage delays.
