Planning a multigenerational family holiday from grandparents to toddlers

Three generations, one holiday. How to choose a base, share the planning and keep everyone happy, from naps to late dinners.

One trip, many rhythms

A holiday with grandparents, parents and children together can be one of the most rewarding trips a family takes. It can also be one of the most complicated. Toddlers need naps, teenagers want to sleep in, grandparents may prefer early dinners, and the parents in the middle are trying to keep everyone content.

The secret is accepting that you will not do everything together. Plan a few shared highlights, then give each group freedom to follow its own rhythm for the rest of the time.

Choose a base that suits everyone

A large villa or apartment with a shared kitchen and outdoor space is often ideal. It gives everyone somewhere to gather without the cost of eating out three times a day, while separate bedrooms let people retreat when they need quiet. Check the layout: a bedroom on the ground floor might suit grandparents, while a pool or garden keeps children busy.

Resort hotels can also work well, especially with connecting rooms, a pool and a kids' club. Location still matters; being close to a beach, a village centre or a few easy restaurants saves on daily logistics.

Beach destinations such as Palma, Faro or Heraklion are popular for family groups, combining short flights from much of Europe with plenty of gentle days by the sea.

Share the planning and the costs

Agree early on who books what and how costs will be split. Some families divide everything equally, others by household or by room. There is no right answer, but talking about it at the start avoids awkward conversations later.

Give each generation a voice. Ask grandparents what they would love to do, let children choose an outing and make sure the parents get at least one evening off. Grandparents are often delighted to babysit for a night, which can be a treat for everyone.

Travel day logistics

Moving a large group through an airport takes coordination. Booking on the same flight and choosing seats together is simplest with a Classic or Flex fare, both of which include seat selection. Families with children under five board first on all AeroVista fares, and strollers can go right to the aircraft door free of charge.

If anyone needs assistance at the airport, arrange it in advance. And appoint one person to hold copies of everyone's booking references and documents, just in case.

Good to know

  • Plan a few shared highlights and leave the rest free.
  • Agree on how to split costs before anyone books.
  • Choose a base with communal space and private bedrooms.
