Why European weather catches people out
Europe packs a lot of climate into short flight times. You can leave a grey morning in Hamburg or Dublin and land a few hours later in the heat of Heraklion or Faro. Even within one destination, a warm afternoon can turn into a cool, windy evening, especially near the coast or in the mountains. Spring and autumn are particularly unpredictable.
The answer is not a bigger bag. It is a set of layers that work together, so you can add or remove warmth through the day.
The three-layer system
Think in terms of a base layer, a mid layer and an outer layer. The base is what touches your skin: T-shirts or light long-sleeved tops in breathable fabrics. The mid layer adds warmth: a thin merino jumper, a fleece or a cardigan. The outer layer protects you from wind and rain: a lightweight, packable waterproof jacket.
Each layer should work on its own and in combination. On a warm day you wear just the base; on a chilly evening all three. This flexibility covers a wider range of conditions than one heavy coat.
Fabrics that travel well
Merino wool regulates temperature well, resists odour and can be worn several times before washing. Synthetic technical fabrics dry quickly after a sink wash. Linen is lovely in heat but creases easily, and heavy cotton such as denim takes a long time to dry. A mix of these lets you balance comfort, weight and practicality.
A scarf is one of the most useful items you can pack. It adds warmth on a breezy evening, covers shoulders when visiting religious sites, and doubles as a blanket on the plane.
Shoes and accessories
Comfortable, broken-in walking shoes are essential for city breaks. If you are expecting rain, choose a pair with some water resistance, and add a pair of sandals or light shoes for warmer destinations. A compact umbrella, sunglasses and a sun hat cover most other eventualities.
Check a reliable forecast a couple of days before you fly, but pack for the range of conditions rather than a single prediction. It is much easier to take off a layer than to find one you left at home.
Good to know
- Pack a packable rain jacket even for sunny destinations in spring and autumn.
- Choose a mid layer that can be dressed up for dinner.
- Wear your warmest layer on the plane, where cabins can feel cool.
