Lake Starnberg and Lake Ammer
The closest lakes to the city can be reached by S-Bahn in under an hour. Starnberger See is known for its elegant villas, lakeside promenades and boat trips, while the Ammersee has a slightly more laid-back character, with swimming spots and the hilltop monastery of Andechs nearby.
Both are ideal for a half-day escape on a summer afternoon, with beer gardens and fish restaurants along the shore.
Garmisch-Partenkirchen and the Zugspitze
Around an hour and a half by regional train, Garmisch-Partenkirchen is a classic Alpine resort town with painted houses and dramatic mountain views. From here, a combination of cog railway and cable car climbs to the summit of the Zugspitze, Germany's highest mountain.
Weather changes fast at altitude, so bring warm layers even in summer and check the mountain webcams before committing to the trip.
Neuschwanstein Castle
The fairy-tale castle near Füssen is one of the most photographed buildings in Germany. Interior visits run on timed tickets, which often sell out in summer, so book ahead. Even without going inside, the walk up to the castle and the view from the nearby bridge are memorable.
It is a long day by train and bus, so set off early.
Tegernsee and Schliersee
South of the city, these lakes are surrounded by meadows and gentle peaks. They are popular with hikers in summer and are good bases for easy walks with views. In winter, nearby slopes offer smaller-scale skiing and tobogganing.
Tegernsee in particular has a well-known brewery and several lakeside paths that are easy enough for most walkers, making it a good choice for a gentle day out.
Choosing the right trip
For a relaxed day with swimming and lunch by the water, the lakes closest to the city are hard to beat. If you want big mountain scenery, Garmisch and the Zugspitze deliver the most drama. Castle fans should make Neuschwanstein the priority, but accept that it is a full day and will be busy in peak season.
Spring and autumn are excellent times to go, with fewer crowds and clear views, though some mountain lifts close for maintenance between seasons. In winter, many of these places transform into snowy escapes, so pack accordingly and check conditions before you travel.
