Mallorca in winter: the coast without the crowds

Mallorca's quiet season brings mild days, almond blossom and empty coastal paths. Here's why a winter visit can be the island at its best.

An island that slows down

Between November and March, Mallorca transforms. Many resort hotels close, the beaches empty and the island returns to a more local rhythm. For travellers who want to walk, cycle, eat well and enjoy the coast in peace, this is a wonderful time to visit.

Winter days are often mild and sunny, though rain and cooler spells do happen, especially in the mountains. Swimming is for the brave, but a walk along an empty cove with the sun on your face is a pleasure few summer visitors experience.

Prices for flights and hotels are often lower too, and those hotels that stay open tend to be quieter and more personal. Locals have more time to chat, and restaurants cater to residents rather than tourists.

Walking the coast

The cooler months are ideal for hiking. Sections of the long-distance route through the Serra de Tramuntana, known as the Dry Stone Route, include paths with sweeping sea views. Coastal walks around Port de Sóller and Deià are popular, as are trails on the Formentor peninsula in the north.

In the east and southeast, gentle paths link coves around nature parks such as Mondragó, where pine woods meet turquoise water. Without summer crowds, you might have a cove entirely to yourself.

Almond blossom and village life

From around late January into February, Mallorca's many almond trees burst into white and pink blossom, covering the interior plains and hillsides. It is one of the island's most beautiful sights and a good reason to plan a visit at this time of year.

Winter is also the season for hearty Mallorcan food, with dishes such as stews and roasts, and local festivals in villages around the island.

Practical advice

Palma stays lively all year, with restaurants, museums and markets open, so it makes an excellent base. Check that hotels and restaurants in smaller coastal resorts are open before you go, as many close for the season. Bus services are reduced, so a rental car gives you more freedom.

Bring layers, a rain jacket and good walking shoes. Mountain weather can change quickly, and daylight is shorter, so start hikes early.

A Flight + Hotel package in Palma, combined with a few days of car hire, is an easy way to explore both city and coast at this time of year.

Good to know

  • Base yourself in Palma for winter, as many resorts close.
  • Plan hikes for early in the day to make the most of daylight.
  • Look for almond blossom inland from late January.
