Making the most of arrival and departure days on a city break

Those awkward hours between landing and check-in, or check-out and your flight, can be some of the best of the trip.

The in-between hours

Most city breaks have a frustrating gap at each end. You land in the morning and your room is not ready until mid-afternoon. You check out at eleven and your flight leaves at seven. Without a plan, these hours can disappear in hotel lobbies and airport cafes. With a little thought, they become bonus time.

The key is separating yourself from your luggage, keeping your energy up and choosing activities that fit the time and location.

Arrival day ideas

Ask your hotel in advance whether you can drop bags before check-in; most will store them. Then head out for a gentle orientation walk around the neighbourhood. Find the nearest metro stop, a good bakery, a supermarket and a place for dinner later. It is a low-effort way to feel at home quickly.

Arrival day is a good time for open-air sights that do not need advance booking: a viewpoint, a park, a market or a walk along the river or seafront. Save the big museums with timed tickets for when you are fresh.

If you have been up early for a flight, a short rest once you check in can rescue the evening. Plan a relaxed, nearby dinner rather than a long journey across town.

Departure day ideas

On your last day, choose things close to your hotel or on the way to the airport. A morning at a market, a final visit to a favourite cafe or a museum near the centre works well. Keep an eye on the clock and leave plenty of time for the airport transfer.

Use the last morning for souvenir shopping, so you do not drag gifts around for the whole trip. Remember liquid limits if you are travelling with a cabin bag only; olive oil, wine and local spirits need to go in checked luggage.

At the airport

Arriving with time to spare reduces stress, especially in busy seasons. If you are on a Flex fare, fast lane security and lounge access turn the final hours of the trip into a comfortable pause rather than a scramble.

Take a moment to jot down a few notes about the trip: favourite meals, places you would return to, things you missed. Future you will be grateful.

Good to know

  • Email your hotel ahead to confirm luggage storage.
  • Save timed-entry sights for your full days, not arrival day.
  • Do souvenir shopping on the final morning.
