Packing for an island holiday: what to bring and what to buy there

Heading to Crete, Mallorca or the Croatian islands? Here's how to pack smart for beaches, boats and island hopping.

Start with your fare

How you pack for a beach holiday depends partly on how you are flying. On a Lite fare, you have a personal item only, which can work for a short trip if you are disciplined. A Classic fare adds an 8 kg cabin bag and a 23 kg checked bag, which gives plenty of room for a week or two by the sea. Flex includes two checked bags, useful for families or anyone bringing snorkelling or watersports gear.

If you are on a lower fare and need more space, a checked bag can be added online for €29.

Beach essentials

A few items make a real difference on Mediterranean beaches. Water shoes are invaluable on pebble beaches and rocky coves, and protect against sea urchins. A lightweight, quick-drying towel saves space and dries fast between swims. A mask and snorkel are worth bringing if you have your own, as rented gear often fits poorly.

A wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses and a light cover-up help in the strong southern sun. Bring a reusable water bottle and refill it where tap water is safe to drink or from larger bottles bought locally.

Sun protection

Sunscreen is easy to buy at your destination, often in larger sizes than you could carry in a cabin bag. Liquids in your hand luggage are subject to security rules, so buying sunscreen on arrival can be the simplest option if you are travelling with hand baggage only. Look for reef-friendly formulas if you plan to snorkel.

Consider a lightweight UV-protective top for long boat trips and snorkelling sessions, when your back is exposed to the sun for hours.

Island-hopping and boat days

If you are moving between islands by ferry, pack light, as you will be carrying your luggage on and off boats and along harbour fronts. A soft duffel or backpack is often easier than a large hard suitcase on cobbled lanes and steps.

For boat trips, a small dry bag keeps phones, keys and cash safe from spray. Seasickness remedies are worth packing if you are prone to it, as Mediterranean winds can make crossings choppy.

Finally, leave a little space for souvenirs: olive oil, honey, local wine or a ceramic bowl. Check liquid rules before putting them in your cabin bag; a checked bag is often safer.

Good to know

  • Bring water shoes for pebbly and rocky beaches.
  • Buy large sunscreen bottles at your destination.
  • Use a soft bag if you'll be hopping between islands by ferry.
