Four easy day trips from Dublin

Cliffs, castles and seaside villages, all reachable by train or bus.

Howth

Thirty minutes on the DART train takes you to Howth, a fishing village with a cliff walk that loops around the headland. Finish with fish and chips on the pier.

Dalkey and Killiney

South of the city, Dalkey has a medieval castle and views over Killiney Bay. Walk up Killiney Hill for a panorama of the Wicklow Mountains.

Glendalough

A monastic site in a glacial valley, with two lakes and well-marked walking trails. Daily buses run from the city centre, or rent a car for more flexibility.

Malahide

Malahide Castle has beautiful gardens and a long history, and the village marina is a pleasant place for lunch. It's only 15 minutes from Dublin Airport, which makes it ideal before a late flight.

Good to know

  • A Leap Visitor Card covers buses, the DART and Luas trams.
  • Pack a waterproof jacket, whatever the forecast says.
  • Many sights close earlier in winter, so check times before going.
