Crete's gorge walks that end on a beach

Some of Crete's best beaches lie at the bottom of dramatic gorges. Hike down through canyon walls and finish with a swim.

Hike first, swim later

Crete is criss-crossed by gorges, carved by rivers and winter rains as they cut through the mountains on their way to the sea. Many of them end at a beach, which makes for one of the most satisfying days out on the island: a walk between towering rock walls, followed by a swim in the Libyan or Aegean Sea.

Gorge walks are best in spring and autumn, when it is cooler and wildflowers or autumn colours line the paths. In summer, start very early to avoid the midday heat.

Samaria, the famous one

The Samaria Gorge in western Crete is the island's most famous hike, often described as one of the longest gorges in Europe. It runs from the White Mountains down to the village of Agia Roumeli on the south coast, which has a beach and tavernas but no road access. Walkers return by ferry along the coast to connect with buses.

From Heraklion, Samaria is a long day trip, as the trailhead is several hours away. Organised tours with transport make it more manageable, or you can stay in the west for a night or two. The gorge is part of a national park, open in the main season, and an entry fee applies.

Closer to Heraklion

In south-central Crete, the Agiofarango gorge near Kaloi Limenes is shorter and easier, with tall cliffs, caves once used by hermits and a small chapel. It ends at a pebbly beach with clear water, making it a lovely half-day outing from Heraklion or Matala.

Further east, near Sitia, the Richtis gorge passes through lush vegetation to a waterfall, before continuing down to a quiet pebble beach. It is a wonderful walk on a warm day, with shade for much of the way.

Planning your hike

Wear sturdy footwear with good grip, as gorge paths are often rocky and uneven. Carry plenty of water, snacks, sun protection and a swimsuit for the beach at the end. Check how you will get back, as some gorges are one-way and need a taxi, ferry or pre-arranged pickup.

Gorges can be dangerous after heavy rain, when flash floods are possible, so check conditions and avoid them in bad weather. A rental car from Heraklion gives you flexibility to reach trailheads early.

Good to know

  • Start early in summer to avoid the heat.
  • Plan your return transport before setting off on one-way hikes.
  • Pack a swimsuit for the beach at the end.
