What makes a good family beach
With small children, the perfect beach is rarely the most dramatic one. You want gentle entry into the water, sand rather than sharp rocks, some shade, toilets nearby and a short walk from the car. Fortunately, the coast around Heraklion has plenty of options that tick those boxes.
Keep in mind that the north coast of Crete can be windy in high summer, when the meltemi blows. On those days, look for beaches tucked into bays or protected by headlands.
East of the city
The coast east of Heraklion has the greatest choice. Amnissos, close to the airport, has a long sandy beach with shallow water and is easy to reach for a first or last day. It also has a small archaeological site associated with Minoan history.
Further along, the resort areas around Hersonissos and Malia have long, organised beaches with sunbeds, lifeguards in season and plenty of food options. They are busy but practical. Stalis, between the two, is often recommended for its fine sand and gentle slope into the sea.
West of the city
To the west, Agia Pelagia sits in a sheltered bay, which means the water is often calm when other beaches have waves. The village has tavernas and small shops, and the beach is sandy with a gradual entry. Neighbouring coves are good for older children who want to try snorkelling.
Ligaria and Fodele are smaller and a little quieter, while still being a short drive from Heraklion.
Agia Pelagia also has a choice of family-run apartments and small hotels, which makes it a comfortable base if you would rather not drive every day with tired children in the back seat.
Days out to add variety
Children who are bored of sand might enjoy a visit to one of the aquariums or water parks in the region, which are popular rainy-day or extra-hot-day options. Knossos, the great Minoan palace site, is close to Heraklion and works best in the early morning before the heat builds.
Bringing beach toys, a car seat and swimming gear for the whole family adds up. A Classic fare includes a 23 kg checked bag, and you can add a checked bag online for €29 on other fares. Rental cars booked through the site can include child seats, but check availability when booking.
