Cologne for first-timers: cathedral, Rhine and old town

Everything you need for a first visit to Cologne, from climbing the cathedral towers to exploring the riverside old town.

The cathedral

Cologne Cathedral is the first thing you see when you step out of the central station, and it is impossible to overstate its impact. Construction began in the Middle Ages and was only completed in the nineteenth century. Its twin spires dominate the skyline, and the interior holds remarkable stained glass and the shrine said to contain relics of the Three Kings.

Entry to the main nave is generally free, but climbing the south tower involves a fee and several hundred steps. The reward is a panoramic view over the Rhine and the city. Go early to avoid the busiest times.

The old town and the river

Between the cathedral and the Rhine, the old town is a cluster of squares and lanes lined with brightly painted houses, many rebuilt after wartime destruction. It is the place to try a traditional brewery tavern and stroll along the riverbank promenade.

Cross the Hohenzollern Bridge on foot, famous for the thousands of padlocks attached by couples, for one of the best views of the cathedral. On the far bank, the Deutz side has a viewing platform on top of a tall office tower.

In the evening, the old town's squares fill with diners and drinkers, and the riverside steps become an informal meeting place. It is a relaxed area to linger, though it can get busy at weekends and during big events.

Museums worth your time

Cologne has an impressive range of museums for a city its size. The Museum Ludwig is known for its modern and pop art collections, while the Romano-Germanic Museum explores the city's origins as a Roman settlement. The chocolate museum by the river is a crowd favourite, especially with children.

If you enjoy medieval art, the Wallraf-Richartz Museum and the Museum Schnütgen, housed in a former church, are both rewarding.

Arriving and getting around

AeroVista serves CGN, and the airport has a train station with direct connections to the city centre in around a quarter of an hour. Cologne's centre is compact and walkable, and trams cover the rest. The city also makes a good base for exploring the Rhineland, with Bonn and Düsseldorf a short train ride away.

If you are planning a short city break, a Classic fare covers an 8 kg cabin bag and a checked bag, which is useful if you plan to bring back chocolate, eau de Cologne or other souvenirs.

Good to know

  • Dress respectfully inside the cathedral and avoid visiting during services.
  • Wear sturdy shoes for the tower climb.
  • A short evening walk across the Hohenzollern Bridge is worth it for the lights.
