Start with how you want to spend your days
Before you look at a single hotel, think about what kind of trip you are planning. A first visit packed with famous sights is different from a return visit focused on food and nightlife, and both are different from a relaxed break with young children. The right neighbourhood is the one that puts you closest to what you will actually do.
Mark your top five or six planned activities on a map. Often a cluster appears, and the neighbourhood in the middle of that cluster is a strong candidate.
The historic centre versus the next neighbourhood over
Staying in the historic heart of a city means you can walk everywhere and step out of the door into postcard streets. The trade-off can be higher prices, more crowds, more noise and fewer everyday local shops and restaurants.
Neighbourhoods just outside the centre often hit a sweet spot. They tend to be more residential, with neighbourhood bakeries, markets and restaurants full of locals, while still being a short walk, tram or metro ride from the main sights. In many European cities, this is where the most enjoyable stays happen.
Check the practical details
Transport links matter. A hotel close to a metro station or a direct airport connection can save a lot of time and money. Look at how you will get from the airport on arrival day, especially if you land late in the evening.
Think about noise. Lively nightlife districts are fun if you plan to join in, less so if you need early nights. Street View tools can give a sense of a street before you book, and reviews often mention noise levels. Consider hills too; some beautiful neighbourhoods are perched at the top of steep climbs, which matters if you have heavy luggage, small children or older relatives with you.
Ask yourself three questions
Can I walk to at least a few of the things I most want to do? Is there a simple way to get to and from the airport? Will I be happy coming back here each evening for dinner and a stroll? If the answer to all three is yes, you have probably found a good base.
Our city guides for destinations across the AeroVista network often suggest areas to consider, which can be a helpful starting point.
