Close to the city
Cala Major is ten minutes from the centre by bus and has calm water that's good for a quick swim. Further east, Ciudad Jardín has a relaxed, local feel and seafood restaurants right on the sand.
Worth the drive
Es Trenc, in the south, is a long stretch of white sand backed by dunes and salt flats, with water that looks almost Caribbean. Arrive before 10am in summer to get a parking space.
To the west, Portals Vells is a set of three small coves surrounded by pine forest, with sea caves you can swim into.
Hidden coves
Cala Varques needs a 20-minute walk through woodland, which keeps the crowds away. Bring water and snacks, since there are no facilities. Caló des Moro is spectacular but tiny, so visit outside peak season.
Good to know
- Hire a compact car. Cove car parks are small and the roads are narrow.
- Pack reef-safe sunscreen to protect the Posidonia seagrass.
- Some coves have no shade. A lightweight beach umbrella is worth bringing.
