What to expect from the weather
Berlin winters are typically cold and grey, with temperatures often hovering around freezing and occasional snow. Daylight is limited, so plan outdoor sightseeing for the middle of the day and save museums and galleries for the late afternoon.
Pack layers, a warm waterproof coat, gloves and shoes with good grip. Pavements can be slippery after a frost.
Festive season highlights
From late November until around Christmas, the city fills with seasonal markets. Some are grand affairs in historic squares, others are small neighbourhood gatherings with a handful of stalls. Expect mulled wine, roasted almonds, grilled sausages and handmade crafts.
Many markets close just before or after Christmas, so if they are a priority, aim to visit in early or mid December.
Indoor Berlin
Winter is the ideal season for Berlin's museums, which are noticeably less crowded than in summer. Spend a morning on Museum Island, an afternoon at a contemporary art space, and an evening at a concert, opera or cabaret show. The city has several major orchestras and opera houses with full winter programmes.
Cafes are another winter pleasure. Settle in with coffee and a slice of cake, a German afternoon ritual known as Kaffee und Kuchen.
New Year's Eve
Berlin is famous for its exuberant New Year celebrations, with a large public party typically held near the Brandenburg Gate and fireworks set off across the city. It can be loud and crowded, so families may prefer to watch from a quieter neighbourhood or a high vantage point.
Packing and planning
Winter weather can occasionally disrupt transport, so leave a little slack in your schedule, particularly on the day you fly home. Allow extra time to reach BER and keep an eye on any travel updates.
Bulky coats and boots take up a lot of room in a cabin bag. If you are travelling with winter gear, it may be easier to add a checked bag, available online for 29 euros, or choose a fare that already includes one. That leaves space in your luggage for any gifts you pick up at the markets.
Good to know
- Hotel prices often dip in January and February.
- A Classic fare includes a checked bag, handy for bulky winter clothes.
- Check in online up to 72 hours before departure to save time at BER.
