Potsdam's palaces and gardens
The capital of Brandenburg sits just beyond Berlin's south-western edge and is reachable by S-Bahn or regional train. Its star attraction is Sanssouci, the summer palace of Frederick the Great, set in a vast park dotted with pavilions, terraces and fountains. You could easily spend a whole day wandering the grounds.
Potsdam's old town is also worth a look, especially the Dutch Quarter with its red-brick houses, and the lakeside paths that make the city feel far more rural than its distance from Berlin suggests.
The Spreewald
About an hour or so south-east by train, the Spreewald is a network of small rivers and canals winding through forest and meadows. The traditional way to explore is by flat-bottomed punt, steered with a pole, but you can also rent a kayak or cycle the riverside paths.
The region is famous for its pickled gherkins, sold from roadside stands and village shops. It is a lovely contrast to the city, particularly in late spring and early autumn.
Sachsenhausen memorial
North of the city in Oranienburg, the former Sachsenhausen concentration camp is now a memorial and museum. It is an emotionally demanding visit, but an important one for understanding the history of the region. Allow a good half day and consider the audio guide or a guided tour for context.
Lakes close to home
If you do not want to travel far, Berlin's own lakes are within the city limits. Wannsee and the Müggelsee are popular for swimming and boating in summer, and both can be reached by public transport. On a hot day they offer the easiest escape of all.
Planning your day out
Most of these trips are easy to do independently by train, and regional connections from Berlin's main stations are frequent. Start early to make the most of daylight, particularly in autumn and winter, and check return times before you set off, as rural services can thin out in the evening.
If you would rather drive, a rental car makes it simple to combine the Spreewald with a few villages, or to explore the lakes of Brandenburg at your own pace. Parking near the Potsdam palaces fills up quickly on summer weekends, so public transport is often the less stressful choice there.
Good to know
- Check whether your Berlin ticket zone covers Potsdam; you may need zone C.
- Book Sanssouci palace interior tours in advance in high season.
