Start with the free stuff
Some of Barcelona's best experiences cost nothing. The beaches stretch for kilometres from Barceloneta to Poblenou, and the seafront promenade is perfect for walking or cycling. The Gothic Quarter, El Born and the Eixample are open-air galleries of architecture, and you can admire Gaudí's facades on Passeig de Gràcia without buying a ticket.
For views, climb to the Bunkers del Carmel, an old anti-aircraft battery with a panorama over the whole city, or walk up Montjuïc through its gardens. The parks of Ciutadella and the Laberint d'Horta, with its hedge maze, are calm places to spend an afternoon.
Museums for less
Many of the city's museums offer free entry at certain times, often on Sunday afternoons or on the first Sunday of the month. Policies change and some require advance booking even when free, so check the official websites before you go. Combining a free slot with a nearby walk makes a full, inexpensive afternoon.
Churches such as Santa Maria del Mar are often free to enter outside of guided visit times, and the cathedral cloister with its resident geese is a city favourite.
Eating well without overspending
The weekday menú del dia is your best friend. Several courses with bread and a drink at lunch typically cost far less than an evening meal. In the evening, Carrer de Blai in Poble-sec is known for pintxos bars where small snacks on bread are priced individually, and neighbourhood bars in Gràcia and Sant Antoni offer good tapas at local prices.
Self-catering is easy too: markets sell fruit, cheese, cured meats and bread for a picnic in a park or on the beach.
Getting around and getting there
Walking covers much of the centre, and a multi-trip transport ticket for metro, bus and local trains works out much cheaper than buying single fares. Avoid taxis for short trips and consider the bus or train for airport transfers.
On the flight itself, if you can travel light, the AeroVista Lite fare includes a personal item only and is the most economical way to reach BCN. If you need a checked bag after all, adding it online costs €29, which is cheaper than doing it later.
Good to know
- Check which multi-trip transport tickets are personal and which can be shared before buying for a group.
- Fill a reusable water bottle at public fountains, which are common across the city.
- Keep valuables secure on busy streets and metro lines, where pickpocketing is a known issue.
