Autumn colour city breaks: parks, vineyards and golden riverbanks

Crisp air, golden trees and harvest food make autumn a superb time for a city break. These network cities do the season especially well.

Why autumn deserves more attention

Summer gets the headlines, but many seasoned travellers prefer October. Temperatures are comfortable for walking all day, the summer crowds have thinned, and kitchens switch to heartier seasonal menus with mushrooms, game, chestnuts and new wine.

Central Europe in particular is built for this season. Cities with large parks, hillside vineyards and wide rivers turn beautifully gold, and the low autumn sun makes even familiar landmarks look new.

Prague and Vienna

Prague's hills are the best places to see the colour. The slopes below the castle, the gardens around it and the paths up Petřín turn yellow and russet, and the views across the river are at their most atmospheric on misty mornings.

Vienna adds wine to the picture. The vineyards on the city's northern and western edges are harvested in early autumn, and the wine taverns on those slopes serve young wine alongside simple cold platters. A walk through the vines with the city spread out below is one of the classic Viennese autumn afternoons.

Munich, Stuttgart and Dublin

Munich's huge central park is a riot of colour in October, and the Alpine foothills a short train ride away offer lakeside walks with snow appearing on distant peaks. Stuttgart sits in a bowl of vineyards and wooded hills, with walking trails that start almost in the city centre.

Dublin's autumn is softer and greener but no less appealing. The big parks inside the city and the mountains just to the south take on deep copper tones, and a pub fire at the end of a blustery walk is hard to beat.

Packing and planning

Autumn weather can swing from warm sunshine to cold rain within a day, especially later in the season. A waterproof shell and comfortable shoes matter more than anything else. If you're bringing walking boots and layers, a Classic fare with its 23 kg checked bag gives you room without squeezing everything into a cabin case.

Autumn is also a rewarding season for food lovers. Look out for roast chestnuts sold from street stalls, pumpkin soups, wild mushroom dishes and game on restaurant menus. In wine areas, partly fermented young wine appears for a few weeks after the harvest and is drunk with simple snacks. Markets are full of apples, pears and root vegetables, and bakeries switch to spiced and nut-filled cakes. Building a trip around a few seasonal meals, a long park walk and a viewpoint at sunset is one of the simplest and most satisfying ways to enjoy a short autumn city break.

Good to know

  • Peak colour in central Europe usually falls between mid-October and early November.
  • Visit vineyard areas at weekends, when more seasonal taverns tend to be open.
  • Golden hour comes early in autumn, so plan viewpoints for mid to late afternoon.
