Apartment or hotel for a family holiday? How to decide

Space and a kitchen, or breakfast and a pool? Weighing up the pros and cons of apartments and hotels for families.

The case for an apartment

For many families, the biggest appeal of an apartment is space. Separate bedrooms mean children can go to bed while adults stay up, and a living room gives everyone room to spread out on a rainy afternoon. A kitchen lets you prepare simple breakfasts, picky-eater lunches and the occasional dinner, which can save a lot of money.

Apartments also tend to feel more like living in a place. You shop at local supermarkets, get to know the neighbourhood and settle into your own routine.

The case for a hotel

Hotels take away many chores. Beds are made, breakfast is served and someone is at reception if something goes wrong. Family-friendly hotels often have pools, play areas or kids' clubs, which can be the highlight of the trip for children and give parents a breather.

Hotels are often more predictable, too. Check-in is straightforward, cots and high chairs are usually available on request and you do not need to worry about the oven or the washing machine.

Some families mix both: a few nights in a hotel on arrival to settle in, followed by an apartment for the rest of the stay, or a hotel with apartment-style family suites that include a small kitchen.

Questions to help you choose

How old are your children? Babies and toddlers who nap and go to bed early often make an apartment's separate rooms very valuable. Older children may care most about a pool. How long are you staying? For a long weekend, hotel convenience can win; for a week or more, an apartment's space and kitchen often matter more.

What is your holiday style? If you want a genuine break from cooking and cleaning, a hotel with half board or a good restaurant may be worth the extra cost. If you prefer flexibility and exploring, an apartment in a lively neighbourhood can be ideal.

Checks for either option

Whatever you choose, check the practical details: lifts, stairs, balcony safety, pool fencing, air conditioning and the distance to the nearest beach, park or supermarket. Read recent reviews from other families.

If a hotel suits you, a Flight + Hotel package from AeroVista keeps flights and accommodation in one booking and can save up to 12 percent compared with booking separately.

Good to know

  • Prioritise separate bedrooms if children nap or sleep early.
  • Check balcony and pool safety before booking.
  • Ask whether cots and high chairs are available.
