Exploring the Algarve's sea caves by kayak and boat

The central Algarve's cliffs hide grottoes, arches and secret beaches. Seeing them from the water is the highlight of many trips.

A coastline carved by the sea

The stretch of coast between Lagos and Albufeira is made of soft, golden limestone that waves and rain have sculpted over thousands of years. The result is a coastline full of caves, arches, tunnels and rock stacks, many of which can only be seen properly from the sea.

Getting out on the water, whether in a kayak, on a stand-up paddleboard or aboard a small tour boat, is one of the most memorable things to do in the Algarve. It also gives you a perspective on the cliffs that you simply cannot get from the clifftop paths.

Kayak or boat?

Guided kayak tours are a popular choice. They usually last a couple of hours, start from a beach and paddle along the cliffs, slipping into caves and stopping at small beaches that are hard to reach on foot. You don't need experience, as guides give a briefing, but a reasonable level of fitness helps, and conditions can be choppy.

Boat tours are the easier option and cover more ground. Small boats can enter some of the larger caves, while bigger vessels cruise along the coast and sometimes include a swim stop. Families with young children often prefer boats, which are faster and drier.

Where to go

Benagil, near Lagoa, is the most famous cave, with a round opening in its roof that lets in a column of light. It has become extremely popular, and local rules about access, landing on the beach inside and swimming have tightened in recent years. Book with an established operator, who will know the current regulations.

Around Lagos, the Ponta da Piedade headland is a maze of rock pillars, grottoes and arches, best explored by small boat or kayak from the town's marina or nearby beaches. Tours also run from Portimão, Carvoeiro and Armação de Pêra.

Safety and timing

Sea conditions on the Atlantic coast change quickly, and tours are cancelled when the swell is too high. Mornings are often calmer and less crowded. Wear clothes that can get wet, bring sun protection and a waterproof bag for your phone, and listen carefully to the guide's instructions inside caves, where swell can push kayaks against rocks.

Faro airport is around an hour's drive from Lagoa and a little more from Lagos. A rental car lets you reach early departures without relying on transfers.

Good to know

  • Book tours a day or two ahead in summer, and choose a morning slot.
  • Bring a dry bag for your phone and keys.
  • Check current access rules for Benagil with your operator.
